Each week on On a Mission we talk to community leaders who are out to make a positive impact in the area. Today, our host Jack Sears talks with Ivan Purvis of Bluewater Maritime School.

Bluewater Maritime School is a USCG licensed training center providing training and licensing for people wanting to work in the merchant maritime industry.

What Is Your Why?

The business was originally formed to offer support and transition point for retiring military entering the civilian world.

It has since evolved into a training center for the entire community to take advantage of. The merchant maritime industry offers anyone with the desire to quickly improve their financial security in a high paying fast track career.

How Did You Get Started In Your Field or Work?

Brought the existing business 2 years ago.

What’s One Thing We Should Know That Makes Your Company Unique?

This industry seems to be the best kept secret. We have the ability to take a person with no former experience in the industry, or no GED and with 3 weeks of training can start them on a career path that they can conceivably earn up to 6 figures in their first year on the job and that is not even working full time.

What Are Your Biggest Goals in the Next 6 to 12 Months for Your Business?

Although Bluewater has been in business since 1998 there is a wide sector of the community who does not know about us or the amazing possibilities that can be quickly achieved in this industry. Our goal in the next 6 to 12 months is to fix that.
